Rehabilitating Song Yu: the Other Side of the Father of Love-Lore
Song Yu's Tang reputation was double: the Gaotang and Goddess rhapsodies, with their cloud-and-rain of Mount Wu, made him ancestor of all love-lore; yet his Nine Arguments founded the tradition of autumn lament, making him ancestor of the disappointed scholar too. Du Fu picks out the three characters was it but a dream to defend him: the cloud-and-rain terrace is not dream-talk but veiled remonstrance — Song Yu used the goddess story to admonish the king of Chu, as Qu Yuan used fragrant plants and fair ones to speak his purpose. Defending the old master is staking his own claim: Du Fu was all his life taken for a poet, not a man of state; calling Song Yu's grace my master asserts the dignity of literature — writing has its own weight, and needs no borrowed authority from achievement.
Bleak Ages Both, Never the Same Time: a Solitude That Crosses a Millennium
This is reckoned the most painful line Du Fu ever wrote on the theme of the kindred spirit. He and Song Yu, men of talent out of place both, stand a thousand years apart — understanding comes too late, too late for mutual comfort. The gazing back and letting fall tears thus aims both ways: weeping for Song Yu, and for himself — will anyone, a thousand years on, gaze back at me like this? He cannot know. Setting the question of kinship on the axis of time cuts deeper than no one understands me: it is not that no one understands, but that the one who would does not live in the same age.
Idle Writing and Wholly Vanished: What Counts as a Relic
The closing couplet performs a cruel ranking: Song Yu's house still stands (its writing idle), the palaces of Chu are gone (wholly vanished), even the boatmen cannot say where they were (to this day they doubt). Palaces three centuries old have vanished; writing more than a millennium old remains — the lifespans of matter and of text run opposite. The poem is really answering the question what is literature for: the palaces of Chu were the relics of power, now a matter of doubt; the writing is the relic of spirit, and though idle, the one thing certain. Du Fu called poetry his family business all his life, and this poem is the archaeological proof of that creed: what the boatmen cannot point to, the words of his fellow-writer point out.
