The Repeated Toilette: Ritual Without an Audience
The cloud of hair done, still she faces the mirror; the silk gown changed, yet again she adds perfume — the action analysis deserves a close look: after the dressing is done she still faces the mirror, finished yet unreassured; about to change, she adds perfume still, the changing itself part of the cycle. Not one of the four verbs completes — the daily life of the palace woman is a performance that never closes, its sole audience absent. Critics set the couplet against Wang Changling's newly favored songstress of Pingyang: Wang writes the triumph of the new favorite, Xue the idle turning of the old — the two halves of palace lament as a matched pair. Makeup applied for the mirror alone is the poem's coldest detail.
Two Instruments of Confinement: the Door-Lock and the Water-Clock
The second couplet writes two instruments only: the golden beast holding the linked rings (the door) and the bronze dragon dripping water (the clock) — one governs space, one time. Cold and long are their readings: the door cold, because its opening is not hers to decide; the day's tally long, because its unit is the drop, not the day. The finesse of the instrument poem is to write circumstance instead of feeling: a locked space plus a stretched time equals a palace woman's life. Set against the Long Gate Rhapsody's grief through scenery, Xue Feng's instruments are colder, more mechanical — the precision of late-Tang palace lament: emotion replaced by gauge readings.
Afar, Peering at the Main Hall: the Hierarchy Built into a Line of Sight
The closing couplet's geography is the poem's verdict: the Immortal-Gazing Tower (far), the main hall (nearer), the imperial bed (the core) — three distances for three ranks. The trousered maid is a menial, yet because she may approach the bed she wins, in space, over every beauty on the tower. The verb peering debases the gazer: she may not approach, only spy; and what she spies is another woman sweeping — even the rough work of sweeping the bed lies closer to power than morning toilette on a tower. The poem's critique needs no statement: the palace is one set of concentric circles, and position is fate. Xue Feng's own career was rocky — proud of talent, repeatedly sidelined — and the cold eye here is probably not spent on the palace women alone.
