A Host Who Never Appears

The title is missing, and that works in the poem's favour: not knowing who the host is, the reader simply walks in. The four couplets are a route — along the clouds to the road's end, deeper by the green stream, then falling petals and flowing water, then a gate and a reading hall, and at last the patches of light on a coat. No person appears, and the place is made clear. The absent host leaves the garden more complete.

The Unseen First, Then the Seen

The first three lines are all in motion, on the way: the cloud's end, the long green stream, petals on the water. Only the fourth line stops, producing two buildings. Liu Shenxu keeps the order steady — first one walks, then one stands. Had the gate and hall come first, the poem would be a floor plan; putting the path first gives it depth. Poems about gardens and mountain dwellings are usually judged on exactly this sequencing.

Deep Shade" and "Clear Radiance" Are One Thing

The last couplet seems to be one dark and one bright, and both are about shade. The patches of light are clear because all around is dark; the coat is lit because the leaves leave gaps. Liu Shenxu finishes one environment with a pair of opposites, which does more than saying "the trees are thick." Tang verse often works this way: no full description, just two details that explain each other.
