Commentary
Four Lines Condense a Conversation
Only the boy's speech is written, but his three-part answer implies the visitor's successive questions: Is your master here? Where has he gone? Can he be found? Jia Dao removes the questions and lets the replies reveal the conversation. The twenty characters hold both dialogue and a hope that rises, then fails.
The Person Is Absent; the Mountain Becomes Clearer
The search ends without a meeting, yet the setting expands from pine to mountain to deep cloud. The recluse never appears, but the world in which he lives fills the poem. His absence is not empty: pine, medicinal herbs, and cloud are enough to suggest a life removed from ordinary society.
