The Standard Fabric of the Ten Talents of Dali: Polished and Airless

Han Hong stands at the head of the Ten Talents of Dali, and this poem is a specimen of their shared style: the middle couplets precisely matched (mountain color against laundry-sound, far-joining against near-announcing), the imagery light and fine — thin shadows, fine grass, a little grotto — and not one heavy word in all eight lines. Old critics said the Dali poets' bone of vigor collapsed, meaning the world-swallowing breath of the High Tang was gone, exchanged for exquisite control. The poem's virtue and its limit are the same thing: Five-City towers, Qin trees, Han palace, Red Hill — a trail of handsome allusions dressing the abbey like a precious object, with little that quickens the pulse. As occasion-verse on a visit to an abbey it is perfectly true to type — the limit of assigned writing is exactly here.

The Closing Reversal: an Immortal-Roaming Poem That Does Not Seek Immortals

A poem on a Daoist abbey should by convention end in longing for the immortals; Han Hong reverses this in the closing couplet: why seek beyond the world — no far search needed; here it is. On the surface the reversal is flattery, raising the abbey to fairyland; underneath it betrays the Dali poets' weariness with the theme. High Tang men truly wanted to become immortal — Li Bai took elixirs and Daoist registers — but by mid-Tang the immortal had become a figure of speech. The phrase is a fairyland of its own here in the world of men is especially relaxed: not argument but a shrug of concession — such things as fairylands, the human world has them too. Laying down the thousand-year theme of the quest so lightly is what makes this poem read as open-minded among its kind.

Night Rain Ended and Laundry Announcing Autumn: the Timetable of One Autumn Rain

The night's rain just ended of the opening and the announcing autumn of the second couplet make one precise timetable: the rain has stopped but the damp remains (hence the bleak clear air), and autumn is deep (hence the laundry-pounding everywhere, winter clothes in the making). The aloofness of the abbey and the seasons of human life overlap in these lines — the immortal mountain too is in autumn, must add clothes too. The detail lands the fairyland back in the human world: the towers of the Five Cities are metaphor; the pounding is real. The third couplet then draws the lens inside the abbey — empty altar, hidden grotto — laying out the evidence for the closing verdict: only because this autumn keeps time with the world while breathing cleaner air does it earn the four characters, a Red Hill in the world of men.
