The Order of a Visit-to-a-Monk Poem

The poem advances by the actual steps of the errand: setting out (sunset), losing the way (where is he, how many turns), arriving (striking the chime, leaning on the staff), and being moved (the world as dust). The four couplets are a mountain path. Li Shangyin does not describe the monk at the start; both the man and the answer stay at the end of the road and the reader walks it out. The patience of this arrangement is the point.

Striking Alone" and "Leaning Idly"

The third couplet gives only two actions and makes the monk clear. The chime is struck for the night, for no listener; the vine staff is leaned on with no sense that anything needs doing. Neither action has a purpose or an audience. Li Shangyin writes the man's attainment by not writing attainment, only what he does. Tang verse usually draws a lofty figure this way.

The Awakening at the End

"In a world of fine dust, why love or hate" is where the poem lands, and it can be read as an exclamation rather than a conclusion. If the world is as small as a speck, love and hate need not be weighed — but the poet says it after being moved, not from long knowing. Placing it last is an admission that this is a state he cannot reach. Writing admiration by standing lower is more credible.
