The Full Scene of Waiting: One Night's Timeline
The poem lays out the whole progress of waiting in order: the fifth-watch bell (waiting until dawn) → dream-weeping and the hurried letter (the futility of sleep and of waking) → candle and musk (the room's leftover warmth) → ten thousand ranges of Penglai (final surrender). Its narrative precision is rare in Tang verse: each couplet is one notch on the scale of waiting, joined they make the record of a sleepless night. The indictment of the first line — an empty word of coming, a traceless going — precedes seven lines that are all its consequences: verdict first, then the evidence. Critics call the feeling deep and the language plain: no word of love or hate anywhere, only the inventory of bell, dream, ink, candle, incense and mountains — feeling carried entirely by exhibits.
Who Dreams, Who Weeps: the Suspended Subject
The seven characters of the dream line suspend their subject on purpose: I dreamed of parting and wept past waking, or she in the dream wept at parting and could not be called back. The two readings share one fact: this weeping happens where no hand can reach — the one in the dream cannot be woken; the one outside cannot enter it. Read against the letter pressed out with thin ink, the night falls into halves: in dream she is beyond reach; awake, he cannot reach even himself (the ink not yet thick is the body slower than the heart). The grammar of the Untitled poems leaks ambiguity this way by design, forcing the reader to house both hearts in turn inside one body.
Ten Thousand Ranges of Penglai: the Inflation of Distance
The closing couplet's arithmetic deserves a separate look: Liu Chen, back from Mount Tiantai, could not find his immortals again and already resented the far Penglai hills — on that distance Li Shangyin multiplies ten thousand: ten thousand ranges more. It is not rhetorical exaggeration but psychological pricing: between mortals and fairyland lies one range of hills; between him and her, ten thousand fairylands. Behind the inflation lies the fact of communication: no telegraph, no messenger, nowhere to ask — when someone fails to appear at an appointed place, they truly vanish. Modern readers feel lost contact far less acutely; this poem restores the scale: in an age without coordinates, one missed meeting is ten thousand mountains.
