An Inverted Opening: the Song First, the Frost After

In chronological order it should be: last night the first frost, this morning the crossing and the parting song. The poem starts instead with this morning I heard, and steps back to last night only in the second line. The inversion puts the immediacy of parting first: the reader hears the song before learning that the farewell took place at a frost-rippled ford. In the five characters the first light frost crossed the river the subject is left unresolved — did the frost cross, or the man? Li Qi refuses to settle it, because settling it would kill the point: the cold crossed together with the man and the season. Earlier critics praised this poem for its steady phrasing and coloring, and the steadiness of the first couplet lies precisely in an arrangement that looks offhand.

The Middle Couplets Do All Their Sums on the Other Man's Journey

Not one line of the middle couplets concerns the sender; all four are the road in Wei Wan's eyes — goose cries, clouds and hills, the pass city, the imperial park — laid out by itinerary like a route map. The geese are heard at setting out, the clouds and hills passed en route, the tree color at the pass as Tongguan nears, the pounding in the park on arrival in Chang'an. Li Qi was the elder; all his care for the younger man takes the form of rehearsing the journey for him, without a single word of worry. The line on the laundry-pounding thickening toward evening is especially tender: that sound fills Chang'an's evenings when every household is making winter clothes, and to a traveler it is coldest. The final admonition follows the same road — only after walking his road for him does the poem speak of life itself.

Do Not, Seeing Chang'an a Place of Pleasure: Grant First, Then Advise

The final couplet has an easily missed layer: it grants first that Chang'an is a place of pleasure. The grant matters — Wei Wan was going to the capital to seek advancement, and the city's pleasures were a temptation he would certainly face. Li Qi does not pretend the temptation away; he says only do not, on seeing it, let yourself fall in, lest the years come to nothing. The records tell how Wei Wan (later Wei Hao) once traveled three thousand li to find Li Bai — a young man with a consuming purpose. Li Qi and he were friends across generations, so the closing reminder reads as an elder's word to a gifted but unseasoned friend, not as stock moralizing. Parting poems conventionally end in sorrow; this one ends in advice, and the friendship reads deeper for it.
